Geography - VI

 Geography Tuition - Class VI | Day-2

In this class, we will read the first chapter of the textbook -class VI. About the stars and planets.

It may happen that you have forgotten the number of Moons for 8 planets. So have a revision. And also do check the NASA website, if currently there are any other changes.

(It happened to me, the student had an old book, where the number of satellites was lesser than the present. Yeah, websites are more reliable and updated than books nowadays. But you should consult official websites, or you may end up collecting the wrong information)

also keep your concept very clear about what is a planet, and what is a start is a difference between the two.

Here are some important one-liners from this "Planets & Stars" chapter:

Universe:

  • the totality of all physical matter and energy including the planets, stars, galaxies, and even the contents of intergalactic space.
  • origin of the universe is explained by the Big Bang Theory, formulated and proposed by the Belgium astronomer and cosmologist Abbe Georges Lemaitre
  • cosmology - a branch of astronomy
  • astronomy -
  • Then find out what is the difference between Cosmology & Astronomy?

Galaxy:

  • a vast system of billions of stars
  • there are about 100 billion galaxies
  • each galaxy has 100 billion stars (approx.)
  • Milky Way galaxy is the home of the Earth and our Solar System
  • It is spiral in shape
  • Milky Way galaxy was formed before 5 Billion years
  • Galileo Galilei was the first person to see this galaxy
  • Dwarf Galaxy - is the latest known galaxy
  • Andromeda is our nearest galaxy (Wrong)
  • Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy is our recently discovered nearest galaxy - only 25K light-years from the Sun

The Big Bang Theory:

  • Big Bang Theory was formulated and proposed by the Belgium astronomer and cosmologist Abbe Georges Lemaitre
  • All the matter in the universe was originally a concentrated lump called a primeval atom.
  • Big Bang was an explosion that occurred 13.798 billion (1 Billion = 1,000,000,000) years ago.
  • Since then all the galaxies have been flying away from one another causing expansion of the universe.

Star:

  • Stars are made of hot burning gases. They emit light of their own and are very large and hot.
  • Proxima Centauri - is the nearest star to the Sun. Proxima Centauri is 4.25 light-years away from us. Read more from NASA.
  • 1 Light-year means the distance light travels in one year - which is roughly about 1,86,000 miles or 3,00,000 km.
